Black British Theatre Awards 2022 – Winners & Fits!

The winners of the Black British Theatre Awards 2022 were announced at a prestigious ceremony which took place at the National Theatre on the 16th October.

The Black British Theatre Awards entered its fourth year of recognising and awarding industry professionals for their works and contributions in a variety of plays, musicals and dance productions that take place predominantly in the UK.

Co founded by Omar Okai and Solange Urdang, their mission stems from a “notable lack of recognition but an abundance of black talent” and the message they carry through the BBTA’s is loud, proud and clear:

“THE BBTA’S PLAN IS TO AMPLIFY THE POSITIVITY OF TALENT AND CREATIVITY IN UK THEATRE. THESE AWARDS ARE A VEHICLE TO DO SO AND A MEANS OF CELEBRATING THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF INDIVIDUALS ACROSS ALL CREATIVE FIELDS IN THE THEATRE INDUSTRY.”

The BBTA’s founders Omark Okai & Solange Urdang danced their way to the stage and looked stunning as they presented Charles Augins with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The evening saw a plethora of talent with nominees, winners, hosts, event organisers and contributors dressed to the nines with no material spared.

“The Black British Theatre Awards was established to highlight and celebrate the influence of Black performers and creatives in the UK’s artistic legacy, and the impact of their contributions on an International level” – The BBTAs

Can we talk about the fits, gowns and suits now?

Of course.

Before the awards ceremony kicked off, all of the nominees and attending guests hit up the photography area which had been set up with two back drops highlighting the National Theatre and 2022 sponsors. Photographers/Getty Images were capturing their fabulous evening and occasion wear. The atmosphere had a magnetic buzz to it and I was in awe at their efforts and unique styles.

Here are a few of my favourites from the night, did someone say EYE CANDY?
(As in my eyes were happy looking at beautiful people all night, in a non-stalkerish, appreciative way.)

Nicole Raquel Dennis (currently starring as Effie in Dreamgirls) shared her ‘coming out’ story with us as she graced the stage and received her award for being the LGBTQIA + Champion 2022! Nicole gave us all the outfit deets on her Instagram were she also thanked the BBTA’S for ‘the most magical evening’

Diante Lodge picked up the award for Best Recent Graduate, suited in River Island and booted by Asos, the geometric open chest shirt added flava to the fit and is now out of stock on the Reiss website!

Ameena Hamid dazzled in an Emerald HURR gown! Winning the BBTA for Best Producer she spoke humbly with gratitude to her team at The Wiz which was on show at The Hope Mill Theatre.

Courtney Stapleton won the Best Female Actor In A Musical Award for a captivating delivery of her role as Belle in Beauty & The Beast Musical. Collecting her award in a burnt orange Zara ensemble Courtney gave an inspiring acceptance speech.

Sadly I didn’t catch this man’s name but I did catch his photo and suave outfit, the orange was oranging very well with the patent shoes. His style and stance immediately caught my attention!

Sir, if you ever see this, apologies I didn’t get your name!
