Two new one act plays by Tamzin Cook

From Thursday 27th October – Saturday 5th November 2022

When our theatres suddenly went dark, the eternal inhabitants were left wondering what the hell had happened. With the most vibrant part of London a ghost town we meet the locals in two iconic theatres who tell us about their lives and deaths while trying to work out if the end is nigh.

First, we head to The Palace Theatre where Victoria, a rather squashed 20s nanny, and Arthur, an unlucky 60s teen live in limbo. Arthur was forced into a gang. They thought he was a snitch; he swears he wasn’t.

In act two we travel around the corner to The Dominion Theatre where our Unknown Soldier is also waiting. Coming to London in the Second World War, our African American hero finds freedom and love with a British air force officer. Is it a love to last the ages?

Tamzin Cook explains the inspiration for this new work

Lockdown was incredibly hard for all of us. I desperately missed theatre and being around creative people at my job in a Musical Theatre Academy. Ghostlight was written as a homage to West End Theatre and to all the people who work and perform in them. While our featured ghosts are fictional, many of the additional characters are real. Getting to research legends of Soho and its environs was a highlight of this project and I hope the audience will recognise some of the characters.

Although these pieces are in part historical, I also wanted to explore contemporary themes. Gangs, police corruption, glass ceilings, homophobia, racism, conversion therapy are discussed through the experience of the characters.

So come hear stories from the West End when it was dark.

The Launch of Play it Forward Theatre Seats.

Why?

It’s going to be a hard winter. Theatres and in particular small theatres aren’t going to get the financial help they need from the government. Funding from Arts Council England to the smaller charities is, according to the Guardian, “A thin gruel that organisations are forced to beg for”. Anyone who has grappled with Grantium, the behemoth of the Arts Council funding machine, will know it’s time consuming, frustrating and frequently fruitless.

What do we do?

Forget lobbying a government whose attitude to the arts ranges from ambivalent to occasionally hostile. If they’ve managed to alienate Sir Andrew LW, they aren’t going to give a fig about us lesser mortals. We need strategies to get us through, support the venues, support the shows, support the local communities. Stand up and ask for the money while offering people on low income the chance to see a local show.

What’s Play it Forward?

It’s a simple premise. Buy a ticket for a designated show at a local theatre, in this case The Union. Email your ticket confirmation to playitforwardtheatreseats@gmail.com and that seat is donated to a low income local or London student, you can choose.

Who can buy these seats?

Anyone, absolutely anyone. It could be local audience members, friends, relatives, random people who support the arts and they don’t even need to be in the country. We aren’t picky, in fact, you don’t like theatre, that’s fine, just buy a ticket for someone who does.

When is this happening?

We are running a trial via a show at the Union Theatre running between 27th October and the 5th November. Ghostlight is a self-funding project. Play It Forward Theatre Seats at The Union will be available here .
