Stranger Things 5: Everything I Know So Far About The Final Season
The creators behind the series, brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, revealed that Stranger Things 5 would be it’s last. “Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things, they wrote. “At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but—as you’ll see for yourselves—we are now hurtling toward our finale.”
“Season 4 will be the penultimate season; season 5 will be the last,” the Duffer brothers explained.
When Will Stranger Things 5 be released?
Considering that nearly three years passed between the debuts of the third and fourth seasons—which was partially due to the pandemic—you have to wonder if Stranger Things 5 won’t return until 2023. If the Duffer Brothers are planning anything remotely close to the scale of Season Four, it’ll most definitely take a while to film. However, if you make an educated guess based on the show’s release date track record, you could infer that the fifth season should be coming out sometime in 2024. If you average the wait times between the seasons, that average is about 23.5 months or roughly two years.
(Uh yahh 2 years.)
It would be nice if we didn’t have to wait so long, of course, but that trajectory places us about halfway through 2024. Additionally, following that same pattern should give us a few official sneak previews and teaser trailers as early as six to eight months before the Stranger Things 5 release.
(2024?! I am itching to watch Stranger Things 5 – can they really leave us that long before the next instalment?)
Between writing, pre-production, filming, and post-production, nobody wants their work to be compromised because they’re rushing through it.
The Duffers also included in this interview that the visual effects team was on par with that of the Marvel Comic Universe, but with a much faster turnaround rate. There were more visual effects scenes in the Season 4 finale alone than there were in the entire third season of Stranger Things.
What will happen in Stranger Things 5?
As is always the case with Stranger Things, there are almost definitely twists and turns to look forward to. But creators The Duffer Brothers have revealed one key detail about Stranger Things 5: that it will likely feature a time jump from season four.
“We learn a lot every time we make a [season],” Matt Duffer told TVLine. “We’ve learned a lot just working with all of our new actors and the ones that we’ve worked with for a long time over this year [making season 4], so I’m sure it’ll change a little bit from that outline.”
He continued, “I’m sure we will do a time jump. Ideally, we’d have shot [seasons 4 and 5] back to back, but there was just no feasible way to do that. So these are all discussions we’re going to have with our writers when we start the room up.”
Previously, the brothers also teased “more exciting stories” to come from the Stranger Things universe, while also nodding towards what we can expect to happen in the fifth series.
In their S5 announcement statement, the creators wrote: “There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes.
How Many Episodes Will There Be?
Once again, as the show runners are still in the process of writing Season 5, this will be based on speculation. The first and third seasons had 8 episodes each, and the second and fourth seasons each had 9 episodes. If that pattern continues, then Season 5 will most likely have eight episodes.
The Duffer Brothers also acknowledged that there have been some complaints about episode length, indicating that most of the episodes in Season 5 will be closer to the earlier seasons’ episode runtimes of about an hour or less. At the same time, they also indicated that the finale episode was going to be closer to 2.5 hours of an “epic showdown.”
(I am here for as much watch time that Stranger Things 5 wants to give – no complaints from me)
Who will star in Stranger Things 5?
I expect all of our favourite Stranger Things cast members will be back on our screens for Stranger Things 5, including Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Noah Schnapp (Will), Natalia Dyer (Nancy), Sadie Sink (Max), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), Joe Keery (Steve), Priah Ferguson (Erica) and Winona Ryder (Joyce).
Fans are also hoping some of the new season four characters will return, like Eduardo Franco as Argyle (but maybe not Jamie Campbell Bower as Vecna.) There was also a whole host of new characters who joined the cast for season four, so we can expect the same will happen in season five.
(Please can we keep Kate Bush as well, although she doesn’t physically act in the series, “Running Up That Hill” has become an obsession and I need it in every episode… Am I OK Hun? At least let it still be a viable form of defence in Stranger Things 5 right?)
