What happened to Dr. Owens at the end of Stranger Things season 4?

Stranger Things season 4 part 2 revealed the fates of many of our most ‘grown to love’ characters, but one remains up in the air as the series makes way for season 5.
Stranger Things season 4 came dramatically and obliterated… twice. The popular Netflix series finally made its return to screens after a three-year Covid hiatus in May, launching its fourth season with seven extended episodes.

If that wasn’t enough hype for the show, and excitement for viewers, Netflix decided to split it into two volumes, with two more episodes arriving on July 1.
Naturally, the internet descended into chaos on both days as fans consumed the new episodes to catch up with their favourite characters and see them battle the season’s new threat.
Sidenote: I was fully involved in bingeing the whole season as quick as I could.
Anyone else free up their time for Stranger Things season 4?
Many of the shows characters went into the Upside Down in a bid to stop the beast from making his way to Hawkins, with shocking consequences and saddening losses.
One character who had to battle threats on this side of the dimension, however, was Dr. Sam Owens. The kind-hearted Hawkins Lab doctor was betrayed by Dr. Brenner simply because he wanted to let Eleven make her own choice. And that left him in a precarious predicament. Chained to a pipe while the lab was attacked by the military.

Whilst we never got to see Dr. Owens as the final episode concluded, rumour has it that he may still be in the NINA Project bunker and seemingly gone unnoticed.
In his final scene in Stranger Things season 4, he is handcuffed to a pipe during a standoff with Lieutenant Colonel Sullivan, who does not set him free. Outside, Eleven brings down an army helicopter and it crashes down on the lab and explodes. We don’t see Dr. Owens again, which leads us to believe he perished in the blast, but it’s also possible that he was safe underground in the bunker-like lab. Only time will tell.

Here’s to hoping that Owens returns in Stranger Things season 5 – and that the good doctor makes a comeback.
