I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jamal Edwards on Sunday 20th February 2022.

We have lost a legend. Jamal Edwards was an inspiration to so many including myself, many of us are aware of the man hours he put in to supporting artists, mastering his craft and shaping UK music culture through @SBTVonline.

Jamal’s music platform, SBTV, helped launch the careers of artists including Ed Sheeran, Jessie J and Dave. He was awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours list in 2014 for his services to music. He also became an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust, received an honorary MBA from Luton and Bedfordshire University and an honorary degree from the University of West London.

Jamal’s passion for finding new artist’s and giving them a platform to express was something special. Even more inspiring was his way with people, his love for helping the youth and limitless energy for networking and always trying to work smarter and harder to do the best for those that needed his platform and support.

Throughout the years of following Jamal Edwards and the growth of SBTV I only had one conversation with him, I asked for advice about starting blogging and creating content and he simply said

“Sammi. Don’t feed the fear, do what your passionate about and what makes you feel alive. Keep learning and keep going for it.”

It was a brief conversation, but he had a way of making me and many others feel confident, able and inspired.

I feel like there are only a handful of people in this world, that, if you’re lucky enough to meet them or even get five minutes of their time, can change things you’d never thought could be changed. Jamal was one of those people and the conversation and affect he had on my mindset was very powerful.

This tribute is not about me though, it’s a post, to highlight the sad passing of a great man that had impacted, inspired and supported so many people regardless of who they were, where they came from or what they did.

May you rest in peace and power Jamal, and I pray your mum and family will receive the strength and support to get through this sad time.
