Why Longtime Britney Spears Fans Are Demanding to #FreeBritney

It all starts with the singer’s conservatorship that dates back to 2008.

For nearly half of Britney Spears’s decades-long career as a world-renowned pop star, the “Toxic” singer hasn’t held full control of her life.

Britney has been under a conservatorship helmed by her father, Jamie Spears, since the singer’s infamous breakdown 12 years ago, which resulted in hospitalization and rehab. Though the stigma surrounding Spears’s mental health battles has followed the singer since 2007, her career never faltered. Marking an official comeback with her 2008 album, Circus, Britney continued to release albums, tour, star in a years-long Las Vegas residency, and launch business ventures including her lucrative perfume and namesake lingerie lines.

Despite multiple comebacks and breakdowns, however, Britney’s longtime fans have vocalized their dissatisfaction in seeing the pop star continue to be under a conservatorship at 38 years old, convinced that the singer herself also wants to be free from the legal binding, Britney’s loyal fans launched the #FreeBritney movement, utilizing social media to bring awareness to the discrepancies surrounding the conservatorship.

A special hearing took place on Wednesday and was the first time Britney Spears has spoken in open court about her case. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny thanked Spears for her “courageous” words during the proceedings.

It followed much speculation about the pop star’s situation, with fans eagerly combing her social media output for clues.

Britney Spears outlined abuse which lasted for more than 20 minutes. After launching into her speech, she was asked by the judge to slow down and later said she wished she could stay on the phone “forever” to avoid returning to her life where she was surrounded by people who said no to her.

Spears told the court she wanted the conservatorship to end and described the arrangement as “embarrassing and humiliating”.

‘I deserve to have a life’

“I’ve been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatised,” she said. “I’m not happy. I can’t sleep. I’m so angry it’s insane. And I’m depressed. I cry every day.”

Spears, a mother of two, said she wanted to marry her boyfriend and have another baby, but the conservatorship would not allow her to. She accused her conservator of stopping her from having a contraceptive intrauterine device (IUD) removed so she could get pregnant.

“I feel ganged up on and I feel bullied and I feel left out and alone,” she told the court. “I deserve to have the same rights as anybody does, by having a child, a family, any of those things.”

Spears said she felt “forced” to tour by her management. She said she spoke out against going straight onto a Las Vegas residency, and her therapist was falsely told she was not co-operating or taking her medication.

It is so sad to hear that this is what her own father has allowed her to be put through, a top selling recording artist with no control over her own body, when did this become ok? Why hasn’t the conservatorship been reviewed or amended as Britney grew? Surely Britney deserves more than to be made a pliable puppet by HER FATHER.

Britney has such a loyal fanbase, I for one couldn’t care less if she has a tour residency in Las Vegas as long as she is happy and healthy. Britney spent years giving the children of the 90’s amazing pop tracks and endured the press and humiliation of a public breakdown.

It seems to me Britney Spears just wants some peace and a family life, why is she not entitled to that after years and years of public service?

The fans are continuously supporting Britney with the #FreeBritney movement, it appears the conservatorship is not. Their intentions are no longer in the best interest of Britney Spears, but honestly, were they ever?

Spears said Wednesday that she believed her father “loved the control to hurt his own daughter 100,000%”.

Dozens of fans gathered outside court on Wednesday, holding signs that read “Free Britney now!” and “Get out of Britney’s life!”

“Everything she said was absolutely heartbreaking and it was actually even worse than I really thought it was,” said Megan Radford, one of the movement’s founders.

A lawyer for her father, Jamie Spears, said he had been troubled by the singer’s allegations in court.

“He is sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain,” the lawyer said in a statement read out in court. “Mr Spears loves his daughter, and he misses her very much.”

A woman is screaming out for some freedom, peace and access to money she rightly made.

Mr. Spears, please release your daughter from this suffering. We have all had enough of watching Britney suffer as much as she has and the fans that love her want to see her well.

Thank you very much.
